Navigating the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP): Understanding Its Distinctions:

  • Timing:
    • The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA- OEP) is from January 1 to March 31 each year.

  • Who is Eligible:
    • This enrollment period is specifically for individuals who are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan (Medicare Part C) as of January 1, 2024.

  • What Changes Can Be Made:
    • During the MA OEP, individuals can make the following changes:
Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.
Disenroll from their Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare (Part A and Part B).

  • Enrollment Options:
    • Individuals cannot use this period to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan for the first time if they are not already in one. It is intended for those who are already in a Medicare Advantage plan to make changes.

  • Restrictions:
    • This period does not allow for changes to prescription drug coverage. If an individual wants to make changes to their prescription drug coverage, they generally need to wait for the Annual Election Period (AEP) or another qualifying event.
